Thoughts to Follow

Quotes from the sermon:

  • Have you heard this expression before: It’s not you, it’s me?…But Jesus is saying to these women on His road of suffering, “It’s not me, it’s you… It is you who need to be prepared for your future.” Why? For one, Jesus probably was foretelling about the Siege/ The Fall of Jerusalem that was to happen a few decades later in AD 70…Josephus, a historian … recorded this…However, I believe most importantly, Jesus was telling everyone to get ready for their own future -while they still had time…That’s why he went on to say V31, “If people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?” …
  • What pricks our hearts more? Jesus’ sufferings? Or our sins that caused Him to come and suffer and die? Because if we are only looking at Jesus’ sufferings, then His suffering will not have much impact on us except on a few days, or a few hours in the year. What fuels you to live the day after today? What motivates you to live for Him between this Good Fri and the next one? Is it feeling sorry for Jesus? Or is it feeling sorry for your own sins and sinfulness, … that it is like…the tax collector in the temple who prays ever so humbly before God (Lk. 18:13) …but can only beat his chest and says, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ …The same goes for us. Are we fully aware, and continue to be fully aware that unless God provides a sacrifice for our sins, unless Jesus is interceding for us day and night as the great high priest, and unless the Spirit is working in us, admonishing, teaching, and steering us, we will be the most pitiful people of all on this earth, and we will not have a chance for eternal life in Christ?
  • If even Jesus Christ at the Cross, the son of God was forsaken by his God and Father, that His anger was poured out upon him when he was sustaining in his body the sins of his people – of you and of me; If the curse of the law was executed on him: and he was killed by the justice hand of His own God and father, as only the death of an innocent Adam could be the one and only worthy sacrifice for the fallen evil Adam. So, if now all these things were done to such a holy, harmless, and innocent person, what shall be done to the “dry” – the guilty ones – the sinful?
  • That is what Jesus wanted the women in Jerusalem to care about – their own souls, their children’s souls, their own salvation, and God’s forgiveness of their debt of sin. That’s exactly His point – Don’t cry for me, daughters and sons of Jerusalem, cry for yourselves, and for your own people…Focus on our own sins and be alert of our sinfulness…be watchful for ourselves…because nothing good lives in our sinful nature… (Par. Rom 7:20-25) …And this is what makes Jesus’ suffering worthwhile and impactful every day of our lives. Because this pricking of the heart by our sins and our sinful nature would be the best-ever motivation for us to live a life pleasing to Him. As we go back to our homes to prepare for this weekend’s gatherings and celebrations, let this be the choice you make for your motivation, for it is the best fuel for us to prepare to celebrate His resurrection, and for his second coming.

“It’s not me, it’s you.”
